An environmental services company needed a system with a web interface where their vendors could access and retrieve documentation relating to hazardous materials—without having to call customer service and handle a mountain of paperwork each time.
The client wanted to have a web interface to allow authenticated users the ability to view their documentation in multiple formats such as PDF and Excel. Users would not only be allowed to view and print the documents that were related to them, but would be able to download those files to their local system.
SD3 worked with the client to design a solution using .NET and XML web services. The solution allows the vendors to access the company's web site and retrieve their documentation. While behind the scenes this involved multiple layers including an ASP.Net layer that makes requests to web services, residing on a separate server. The web services would then interact with an Oracle database to return the data back to the user's browser. From the user's perspective it was designed to be as simple as requesting a file and getting it.
Technologies used included: ASP.Net, VB.Net, SOAP, XML, COM, Oracle, Javascript, and Windows 2000 Server.
Just as designed. The system now allows users to handle several requests with no problems—and no time-wasting duplicate work! CSR's no longer have to search for hard copy and faxes. Vendors are happy because they can access their documentation when they want, with instant turnaround time.
