Inventory Control

Hazardous Chemicals Need a Special Handling App

Technicians at an environmental services company use hazardous chemicals each day at their job sites. They perform jobs like applying treatments to control algae in corporate ponds, spraying for mosquitoes in neighborhoods, and applying mosquito treatments to street catch basins. When the technician’s shift starts they load the necessary chemicals on their truck at the warehouse. At the end of the day they return unused chemicals back to the warehouse. Our client needed to improve process efficiencies and controls surrounding chemical inventory check in and check out. They had to make sure that they complied with all federal regulations. Our client determined that a mobile application (app) with a few simple features would meet their goals. SD3 had already developed a comprehensive field services mobile app for our client, so they turned to SD3 to build this app, too.

What the client wanted:

The shift supervisor would log in with valid credentials before using the app. The app would need to access the job schedule database and then display a summary of the total amount of each chemical needed for each of the technicians jobs for that day. With the assistance of the chemical summary screen the supervisor would work with the warehouse representative to load the truck with the required amount of chemicals. At the end of the day all incomplete jobs and chemical usage adjustments would be summarized on a screen and used during the chemical check in process and variation would have to be documented.

What SD3 did:

SD3 designed and developed the application screens, database tables, and custom web service messages necessary to communicate with the central server. In addition, we designed and developed the server-side web services and SQL Server database interaction in support of the mobile app. The app was deployed for internal use by the clients field technicians using a custom Android app distribution model.

The outcome:

The client was pleasantly surprised at the almost immediate reduction in the amount of chemicals used. The variance between the chemicals needed for a job and actual chemicals used was significantly reduced. The app truly helped control the process and comply with federal regulations. A surprising benefit was the reduction in chemical cost and the contribution this had on overall profitability. It paid for itself in just a few months.
