Android Mobile Tracking Application

What functionality was required:

While attending a charity function, a friend of SD3 was discussing how she would really like a mobile app to keep track of all of the places she has been each day. Ideally she would really like to be able to see her tracks overlaid on a geographic map so that she could visually see where she had traveled.

What SD3 did:

The SD3 technical team determined they could build this app fairly quickly. The app’s usability details were fairly straightforward. The app would initially display a graphical splash screen followed by the main menu screen. The main menu would have the following options:

  • Record Track
  • Review Tracks
  • View Locations
  • Preferences

The user would first select Start Tracking which would then prompt the user to enter a tracking session name for the tracking session that is about to start. After the user enters the tracking session name the mobile device would then start tracking GPS locations every thirty seconds. The user can then select View Tracks on Map from the main menu which would initially request the user to choose a Tracking Session from the list. Then a geographic map would be displayed showing all of the GPS locations gathered for that session. A preferences screen allows the user to choose:

  • How often the GPS location would be gathered
  • Their default map view (satellite or map)
  • To show their current location
  • Which type of marker to use (pushpin or android)
  • To show or hide the markers
  • To show or hide their path

The outcome:

SD3 designed and developed the app and database on the Android platform. The app was deployed to the Android Market as a free download. Our friend who initially had the idea downloaded the app and has enjoyed using it. An additional benefit was that the app helped ensure she does not miss any expenses for her business travel. She was very happy with the functionality of the app and the passion of the SD3 team that quickly developed and deployed this app for the Android Marketplace.

Technologies:

Eclipse, Android 2.3, Java, SQLite, Google Maps
